Hydroponics and Victory Gardens
Hydroponics has been around at least
since the hanging gardens of Babylon were
built around 600 BC. Simply put,
hydroponics is the process of growing
plants without soil. Hydroponics is also
known as 'soilless' or 'soil-less'
gardening. For the home gardener there are
distinct advantages to growing
hydroponically compared to growing in
soil. Incorporating hydroponics into a
victory garden is not only educational,
but will quickly point out the advantages
of soil-less growing over growing plants
in soil. These include:
- hydroponic growing uses less water
than conventional in-soil growing
methods including drip irrigation
- there are no soil borne pests to
attack your plants
- there is no fertilizer leaching into
the ground water as with gardening in
soil
- the plants get optimal nutrition and
use the amount of nutrients they need
for their growth
- the danger of plant shock due to soil
dryout is eliminated
- uncertainties regarding soil makeup
and porosity are eliminated.
- hydroponic gardening is earth friendly
But getting started in hydroponics can be
daunting. There are a vast array of
hydroponic techniques, each with its own
advantages and disadvantages. And there
are literally hundreds of competing
nutrient solutions to choose from, each
claiming dramatic success. How to get
started?
This is where ArtSciDesign,
LLC and Plantechnics come in. We
